Medina

Medina, 1 Creekside, Deptford, Borough of Lewisham, London SE8, 2002 • A 1910s-looking typeface, advertising who knows what – but I’d guess auto related, as this is a long-standing garage site. It’s now got a sign saying ‘windscreens / side windows’ over it. Medina is the name of Islam’s second holiest city, but it also simply means ‘town’ in Arabic and is generally used to describe old walled quarters.

  1. Medina was an oil refining company, supplying cooking oil to, amongst others, the Union Castle liners that used to come into Deptford for a refit.
The remaining building is the office block, a happy place to work according to a (late) relative who was employed there around 1925-1932.

    • Thanks for that evocative bit of history. So that fragment of wall encompassed the days of liners, the Deptford shipping trade, and a happy pre-war office. And now it’s all gone, including the Medina sign.
