Northern Rock, 214-216 High Street, Dorking, Surrey, 2002 • This seemed boring at the time but I was attracted by the neglected-looking logo. Who could have guessed that such faded suburban dullness presaged a tale of crazy hubristic loan-mongering and crashing oblivion? By 2008, this once-venerable institution had suffered the UK’s first bank run for 150 years, and been nationalised. The state later sold it on, and it’s now a Virgin Money ‘shop’.
