The Cleveland

The Cleveland, corner of Paradise Street and Price Street, Liverpool L1, 2003 • Next to the Seamen’s Dispensary (gone) and opposite the Gordon Smith Institute for Seamen (to be redeveloped), this functional boozer catered to a salty clientele and used to boast strippers, according to this. Demolished in 2006, it was replaced by a sculptural car park, part of glitzy Liverpool One shopping quarter. There’s a great picture of all three institutions in 1992 – the year after the dispensary closed – here.
