Lady Godiva News Devlins, 26 Broadgate, Coventry, West Midlands, 2013 • The equally weird twin of yesterday’s Peeping Tom newsagent; they’re situated either side of Coventry’s “famous” Lady Godiva clock, hence the names. Below is the clock tower, and at bottom the naked strumpet on her horse, with Tom peeping on.
What a lovely story. It really bugs me when people say high streets need Costa coffee’s to show they are up and coming, but I’d rather see the likes of this any day. Shops should look proud of themselves, or be interesting. i don’t go in for all this urban decay, roller shutter, poorly designed 1980’s lightbox stuff. I’d much rather have my high streets quirky, unusual, beautiful, odd and independent. This is the sort of thing that would allow me to strike ups conversation with the owner. If only more people did this. We are trying to, but many small shop owners still want to call their shops ‘ultimate dry cleaners’ or ‘excellence take away’ without being any of those things, and it’s boring.
I was once in this shop on a Sunday when someone came in wanting to buy one of the many items displayed in the window, only to be told by the dozy teenager behind the counter that they didn’t have the keys to any of the window displays.
If I’m honest, that shop looks quite scary. I bet they never open the window displays.
