Front Page News, Odeon Building, 33 Jordan Well, Coventry, West Midlands, 2013 • Lebara seem to have colonised every paper shop in the universe, but this must be the grandest. (2014 update: in the few months since I photographed this, it’s already shut down – there’s a photo of the revealed ghost signs and some more info here.)
I stumbled upon this post while doing some research on a photo I took of some old signs that were revealed following the closure of this shop and the removal of their signs. I’ve posted my photo at https://www.flickr.com/photos/10515323@N08/14089691504/ Your photos are excellent for showing what the doorway looked like while the shop was still open.
Thanks, what an amazing old sign you spotted underneath – I recommend people to go check it out! And with proper research too. You may be interested to know that the good old Coventry burglar alarm beside the ghost sign features on another of my blogs, Burglar Alarm Britain here http://burglaralarmbritain.wordpress.com/2013/02/01/status-stratford-upon-avon/ – but maybe that’s a bit too obscure even for ghost sign afficionados…
PS, I’ve now updated the post and added link to your Flickr page.
The Coventry Telegraph article http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/local-news/red-button-coventry-university-expansion-3014805 says that Coventry University want to expand into the space that was occupied by a number of shops and therefore didn’t renew their tenancies. No work seems to have started yet but I’ll be surprised if these signs survive once it does. There’s an extra %20 on the end of your link in the blog post so it doesn’t work properly at the moment.
Doh, I should check my own links, I’ll correct it.
