Marcon & Co.

Marcon & Co., 14 Leytonstone Road, Borough of Newham, London E15, 2006 DSS-friendly carpet store enlivened by layers of classic signwriting. Local aspirations must have changed, as it later became Excel Centres, a tuition agency.

  1. This was the last interesting old shop on the High Road. Signwriting’s made a bit of a comeback at Bismillah barber shop further toward Leytonstone, and there’s a very nice handpainted sign at Artefacto, which tattoos Leytonstone’s new population of hipsters.

    • You’re obviously more of an expert on the area than me – I was just passing through. Sounds like I need to revisit!

  2. Just remembered I blogged about Marcon’s – I must have taken the pic about the same time as you. Completely forgotten about it until I read your post.

Interesting shops (and signs) have always fascinated me. I’ve been ‘collecting’ them on flickr for a few years. Getting harder and harder to find.

    • Thanks, I enjoyed looking at the photos. Glad to see you got the New Piccadilly, including its “ripped put” stage. It was so famous, I never bothered to photograph it properly, but of course when it had gone, I wished I had. The food there was really horrible, mind you, they made disgusting omelettes and even the tea was foul.

    • Feel free to post anything relevant, plenty of room on the internet! Ha ha, those blokes are having a real argy bargy with that sign. Videoing some blokes taking down an old sign ranks pretty high on the typographic sadness scale, though perhaps not as highly as watching it. (I jest).
